I am writing this letter to give Shiney James my highest recommendation. I have worked with Shiney for more than 20 years. She is a trusted and respected professional with a reputation for having a strong work ethic and commitment to success.
Shiney’s project management skills are outstanding. She has the unique ability to understand organizational needs, to capture a vision, and then translate this into a successful outcome. Throughout her career, she has brought together disparate groups of administrators and departments who had competing interests and demands. She gave each representative the opportunity to be heard while methodically facilitating a mutually successful outcome. Whether it is a program, event, series, or a technical project, Shiney is tremendous in her execution. In-person orientation programs, remote live orientation, learning management system creation, and testing databases are just a few examples of her work that had an impact on thousands of participants each year.
Shiney’s work and passion for training and development is evident in the 100+ trainings she has created. She is committed to designing, implementing, and evaluating creative, relevant training programs to help her participants succeed. I admire the personal touch she incorporates into her training programs. Whether it is a singular training session, or a multi-day program, Shiney can build the content that encourages growth and learning from beginning to end.
Shiney is an asset to any team and workplace. Please contact me if you would like to discuss her experience and expertise.

After retiring from teaching, I took the position of Operations Coordinator (2007-2009) under the leadership of Shiney James, Director of Boston University Orientation. I was continually impressed with Shiney’s attention to detail and success in planning and executing numerous large events for thousands of students and their parents. Shiney’s remarkable organizational skills provided stellar results. Shiney impressed me with her character, diligence, project management and ability to communicate. I loved working for her and with her.
Shiney showed great care and ability in choosing outstanding students (from a very large pool of students who wanted to be hired) and instilling in them exceptional work skills. Both years she chose a diverse group of exceptional workers. Shiney was mindful of the importance of developing the students’ professionalism with a commitment to high standards and quality service – a indispensable foundation to what it takes to be a valued worker.
I’ve had the privilege of calling Shiney James one of my most revered mentors for the past 14+ years. I was hired by Shiney in the summer of 2008 as a student advisor with the office of orientation at Boston University. I can confidently say that my time serving under Shiney James’ leadership contributed most significantly to my personal and career growth throughout college.
Shiney was one of the first supervisors I had who modeled high support and high expectations. She was one of the first mentors I had who demonstrated a commitment to unleashing my potential during that summer and she continued to serve as a champion and guide as I navigated my career post undergrad. I often reminisce with my former student advisor peers – many of whom I call my closest friends to date – about the community Shiney created and how our summer as orientation leaders was one of our most memorable, fulfilling and transformative workplace experiences.
While working under Shiney, I was always in awe of how she took on the vast responsibility of collaborating across dozens of university colleges, departments and stakeholders to seamlessly execute welcoming 4K+ new students, parents/caretakers and families to campus each year. This was all while simultaneously designing and implementing a leadership development and training program embedded into a summer job for those of us hired by her to work with the office of orientation. Shiney is a true mastermind and an impeccable project manager and leader. Her work ethic is unmatched and I witnessed operational excellence in action each day I worked with her. I continue to hold Shiney to the highest regard and I will always be grateful that I had the opportunity to serve our BU community under her leadership!
I have worked closely with Shiney for three years. During that time, she has been an incredible manager and mentor. Her support and belief in me set me up for success in my other internships and jobs.
Shiney always goes above and beyond and is an expert at community building. Her project management skills made the transition to a virtual orientation seamless and ensured it was still valuable to students. Shiney would be an incredible asset to any team.
In interviews, I often bring up Shiney when asked about impactful leadership. She is able to work with a plethora of working styles and help her team members grow. I served as a Student Advisor while Shiney was the Director and Shiney was thoughtful about making sure that we were good at our role but also that we were good people. Years later, I realize the impact of the learnings from that summer. She is a very present and mindful manager and her project management is top tier. Shiney’s attention to details is what made our students have the best experience and that’s something I try to strive for when creating impactful first impressions and events. She built a space that community was created and flourished. I am lucky enough that I had that foundation of learnings from Shiney so early on in my career.
